A newborn sun hides
A newborn sun hides
Behind
Slick, grey cloud
Waiting for the break,
The ground
A scab of old snow.
Green shoots of recovery
Peep through dirty drifts
Announcing summer with a whisper
Barely heard
Above the crunch of boots
On frozen earth,
The slow return of colour
To the monochrome
I feel such sorrow.
The weight of her.
I could be winding down
An endless staircase
Falling through the years
Tending to every single step
Finality divine
Even half broken
There is a little momentum
Though minimal progress
My catalyst
Still lacking
Something of her
Escapes the clutches of doubt
A simple thing
An embrace
Of sorts
Cold fingers
Holding me together
Seizing the moment
The tightening of its grip
Lightening the burden
Lifting me
And I walk on
Both with and without her
Forever in her debt
If only for the comfort
I am given
When all seems lost.
