And so we sailed

naturemusicpoliticsmemorytime

And so we sailed

Out of Aegina, imagined we, as brave

As ancient Ulysses

An epic odyssey

Where the best of us found divinity

At one with the ocean

Your eyes, as green as emeralds

In godly proportion

To the beauty of the bay

The two tall sails taut, against the prevailing wind

Lifted as we were

Skimming the light swell

Leaving a foaming wake behind us

Until at last, we lay at anchor

Where, from the highest point

Above the bow

We naked bold adventurers

Dived down into the deep

Clearly seen so far below

Liberating treasured shells

No longer used as home or safe haven

We took our turn

To blow a salt-soaked conch

As wild as any warrior

Expecting the gods to rise

The ancient cyclops

Poseidon’s favoured son

Ready to smite the shapely boat

With all the anger he could muster

Until at last

The sun began its fast descent

To the far horizon

Marking the edge of the world

And with a scud of clouds-a-closing

Bad weather fast approaching

It was time we turned to port

Our Grecian sea adventure

As distant as the past

Such a long time over

So well remembered,

To the very last.
