As the sun shines
As the sun shines
Two dogs laze
Sleeping easily
Snoring freely
Ignoring the ants
Busy with their discoveries
Collective unconscious
Can move mountains
A crafty old crow
Who knows when
To work alone
Sidles to the food bowl
Pilfers a crumb before
Ambling boldy
Across to the water dish
To steal a drink,
Splashing attentively
In a daily cleansing ritual
The old dog raises an eyebrow
The pup jumps up
A young gun
On the run
The bird flutters
Onto a distant rooftop,
A gable end,
Faux Victoriana,
Echoing the frustrated bark
With a mocking caw
The crow will wait
Until the heat of the day
Draws the sting out
Of even the most enthusiastic
Bird catcher
Not that he had ever been caught
Or likely would be
Not on a lazy dog day
Of an afternoon
Like this
When it is only
The ants who will be
Industrious enough
To carry
Their surprises
All the way home
