Did I know,

naturememorytimeloveidentitymortality

Did I know,

When rolling in the hay,

Tumbling in thrall to hysteria

Finding the truth of lust

In breathless coupling

Scratched by briars

When the stars were bright

The blood as hot

As boiling point

When to lie in a woman’s arms

Was akin to uncovering a mystery.

A young traveller

Following the long way home

As Ulysses once did

Never was he known to refrain

From the finer things

Whilst remaining true

In his desire

To reach a final destination.

How many times

Was it deemed a chore

An expectation

A rite of passage

Would there be a meeting of minds

As well as skin?

Never jump too far ahead

Of your heart

Or take another for granted

How long did it take to know

That there was always

A purpose

Waiting to be found.

The dawn of a truth

A moment of awakening

A flash of inspiration

The tail of a comet

Hurtling through a night sky

Bright as sunlight

Exploding into vermillion.

When all the colours in a palette

Combined

To paint a masterpiece

A Van Gogh night

Of a thousand stars

As velvet heavens unfurled

In a grand reveal

An infinite parade

And in the space between

One blink and another

Did then I know?

Maybe for the first time

That love needs both

Heart and soul

To grow

Into so much more than

A delightful diversion
