Drowning

lossnaturecitymusicmemorytime

Drowning

Is easy

Wallow in shallow water

Even a spoonful

Can be too deep

Every incline a little too steep

Hiding in shadow

Too afraid

To raise an angry voice

When we were told

We would never have a choice

Born to suffer

At the hands of others

To spill our blood

And give our lives

Scratch a living

Using bare hands

Scraping in the dirt

Is what we were worth

Dead before our birth

Digging underground

Living in the dark

Too blind to ever

See the light

Is what was said

About the hoi poloi

There is nothing

Of value

Inside our head

We are beasts of burden

Take the weight

Don’t spare the rod

We are not worthy

Of the time it takes to breaks us

Just bury our bodies

Beneath the sod

In paupers graves

For what it saves

But the earthworm

Is as enriched

By our decay

As much as yours

And remember

If we stand in the light

The shadow we cast

Is all but the same

Two wrongs

May not make a right

But if we break

The old restraints

That bind us

To the yoke

It is no joke

We can win the fight

Without the need

To bleed

As to be truly free

All we need

Is to believe

And we will be.
