Foyles Charing X Road

Foyles Charing X Road

Drifting

Down Charing Cross Road

I break into

A memory of gingerbread houses

And Christmas decorations

Winter warmers

And a Tree in Trafalgar Square

Childhood jaunts

Favourite haunts

The Guinness Book

Of World Records

In prime spot

Foyles is a revelation

From before Potter

When we were all muggles.

A bookshop with hidden corners

Magical mysteries

And stacks to hide behind

Get lost in

A magical odyssey

For the wide-eyed and curious.

Full of information

About the world

Psychology and Toxicology

Art History with pictures

Theological tomes and Scriptures

Stephen King.

A man reading a Kindle

In a bookshop

Is a funny thing

Tickling my fancy

It might be irony

But it is cheeky

So many people

Reading for pleasure

Looking for treasure

In the pages, they turn

Others seek an answer to a question

They are yet to ask

Until taken to task

By a tutor

Who rides a motor scooter

To classes

He wears wire glasses

A parody of a don

If we are not careful

Idiosyncrasy will be gone.

It is never as quiet as a library

But there is a subtle reverence

For information

And seekers of wisdom

Leaving for the station

With a brand-new book

And a train ride home

To read in peace on the sofa

Warmed from a fire

Burning in an Inglenook
