Hot in the city
Hot in the city
There is a haze
Everything shimmers
Grease bubbles on burned skin
The grime of life
The twist of torn sheets
The winding of tortured sleep
A welter of sweat
Casting a rainbow
As it falls
We are melting
Wax candles
Tallowed
Steam driven
Nobody moves quickly
It slows the blood
In clogged arteries
Coronary thrombosis
Spontaneously created
Damning the consequence
Of indolence
Dreams catch everybody
Unprepared for a change
In reality
It is winter for a while
A Dali clockface
Breaking the spell
Disembodied
For just a few moments
Weightless
Without
A bucketful of sky
Pressing down
Light particles, as sluggish as syrup
Slowing time.
Wading birds struggle
To stand
One-legged,
Toppling over.
Concrete and clay
Searing bare feet
Old dogs stay home
We try all we can
To remain undercover
Sheltered
Thankful for air conditioning
Cursing sun kings
And climate change
For the excessive heat
We play no part in
As the hot air rises
The balloon goes up
Up and away
Until it blows.
