I can see through you

griefnaturememorytimeidentitymortality

I can see through you

The deceit

Of perfection

A glimmer of hope

In the way you look

At me

Drawing me in

With an easy smile

Eyes dancing

Between green and blue

As the world recedes

Into the distance

Where lights wink

Out one by one

As corporeality

Shuts down,

The only means

Of escape

Is to look away

Never daring to break

The connection

Between then and now

Until a butterfly

Flutters into

The garden

And I see you

Refracted

Through hollowed veins

Spidering through

Paper-mache wings

Even as it floats down

Behind

Your shoulder

It remains

Shimmering

Iridescent

Until the image

I thought was you

Begins to fade

Disassembling

Dissolving into

A darkness

As thick as the murk

Of marsh gas

That expands to fill

My grieving soul

Until, in time

I remember

It is holding true

To the beauty

I have

In my memory

Of you

That has helped

To keep me as

Full of wonder

As a Butterfly
