A dog barks
A dog barks
A primal
Anguished howl.
Somewhere out of sight
A man whistles
In opposition to
The sound of an engine running
A van unloading,
The ring of a bell
The hoot of a horn.
I heard a baby cry
And then, there was silence
Until the lark ascended.
At sunrise, there is an end to darkness,
It is a wonder I get anything done
When the Eagle owns the sky
And every living thing
Stands still.
No more sad songs
Play today
I have heard them all before
Some singers have a way
With a refrain
Bend words
Turn them into heartbreak,
They catch the soul
Re-open old wounds
Tear at ragged stitches
Bleed into the night.
How many times must I pick myself up
From the floor
Before I have truly risen.
Perhaps there should be no
Sad songs to play
Hard things to say
When there were more than enough
Yesterday.
