I saw you
I saw you
In the blue flash
Of a Honeyeater
The majesty of an Osprey
Circling above a colony of
Beach Curlews
The glint in the eye
Of a hurricane as it wandered
Out beyond the horizon
Having left its mark
On the landscape
In my minds eye
Gazing into the sunset
From a rock
In the sea at Lindisfarne
Remembering
Grace Darling
Lifeboats and self-sacrifice
Walking in the distance
Disappearing in shadow
Dancing through
Soft white surf
The gentle curve of the bay
The long flat stretch of sand
Below Bamburgh Castle
The colour of ripe corn
Hard packed
Showing the sharp outline
Of bare feet
Overlaying memories of
Horses hooves, Kings and nobles
Standing in line
To repel invaders
Finding their peace
In communion
Vikings in longboats
Gazing at Northumberland
Rolling into the sunset
Believing it was Avalon
A place they could call home
Bringing new songs
To young hearts
Growing together
In union
In a silhouette
Standing proud
In the prow of a sailboat
Ploughing through the sea
A tall ship full of mystery
Its wooden rails
Polished with exposure
To the sun
Abraded by salt and wind
Confidently placed
In history
Proudly preserved
In full sail
Just for the thrill
And derring do
When once it was
A tea clipper
As swift as it could be
A teaching aid for children
A right of passage
An escape for some.
With much to ponder
Today was full of wonder
Both close to me
And far away
I beheld you
In everything I saw
