Is progress

lossgriefnaturecitymusicpolitics

Is progress

Leaving me behind

Watching the world

Slip over the horizon

Everything we need

For survival

In a container ship

Bound for the furthest reaches

Of our imagination

When it never rains

In the right places

And a tectonic shift

Is only a moment away

From silicon valley

All I dream about

Is a fully online fridge freezer,

Accessing my life

From a smartphone

Before the batteries die

An emoji kiss

Is as romantic as any spice

From the orient

Saffron rice

Damask woven wall hangings

Masking a fourteenth century

Whitewashed wall

And a chicken tikka wrap

At lunch time

For less than the price

Of my bus fare

There is no magic

In electronics

Unless the power fails

Play cards by candlelight

Better by half

Than a game of Monopoly

When every joker

Believes they are an entrepreneur

Buying all the hotels

Whilst leaving the locals

Freezing

To death in the cold

Am I too old

Or is there sadness

In losing sight

Of the process

Of managing progress

For the benefit of all

There is no legacy

Without good husbandry
