An etched pen-and-ink illustration with a red accent, evoking "Is what we do ever enough.".

Is what we do ever enough.

politicsloveidentitymortality

Is what we do ever enough.

When do we know.

How can we be sure

What we do is right,

Or necessary,

Who it benefits,

Why we even bother.

What keeps us going

When the worst happens

No matter how hard

We may try.

Can we be selfless.

Is there always

A motive,

A payback.

If we truly love

And give of ourselves

Without reward,

Is that proof of

Our humanity,

Or plain stupidity.

When the truth of things

Is revealed,

Do we look

To our good deeds

As reward enough.

Should we be weighed

And found wanting

Cast down with

No repeal,

Do we have cause

For complaint.

Not that

Such a thing will happen,

If what we reap

Is not dependent on what

Is sown.

Fairness is nothing

But a myth

And we all come to the same

Conclusion

Darkness is not

Exclusive

It surrounds us all,

Equally.

Even in life.
