Nobody said it was easy
Nobody said it was easy
But as kids,
With imagination eating a hole
In the barriers
To working-class success
Everything is possible.
Children have a way of
Seeing the world
And all of its bounty
As just being there for the taking.
Tell me why not?
They can see it
Everywhere
On television, in the movies
On billboards
Pretty things all in a row.
Why do so many people
With starched faces
Tombstone smiles
And a stuck-up
Way of looking down their noses,
Even if they are short-arsed
Over-achieving eugenicists
With an underbite,
Get in the way
Of a dream,
When it is tough enough
To climb out of the box
Traditionalists keep us in.
Jackboot us down
With little regard
For the rags to riches story
The child prodigy
Climbing out of a sink estate
An Einstien postman.
Breaking the mould
Is a rare achievement
Not worth the time
It would take to change the tune
Instead
More useless
Unwanted junk is thrown in
On top,
The lid is pressed down
And hey…I will sit on it
For good measure
