So they cleaned out the pond
So they cleaned out the pond
Today
I don’t know who
But I imagine it was
The people who clean
Away pondlife
The Koi guys,
The corporate body,
May they rest in peace.
I must have missed the missive
Landlords with soul
Who would have thought
Such a thing existed.
The fish were singing
Some were jumping
Full of the joys of life
If they had wings they would fly,
Escape the bonds.
In shorts
And singlet
Thankful for darkened glass
Minding my business
Drinking at noon
Unsure of my station.
The other day
The odd job man
Cleaned the soffits
With a wire brush
Scrubbed the architraves around the door
It was all going on at once
Too much energy for one person
Up and down the ladder
Leaning this way and that.
I remember there was a day
At least one day
When I could have been him
When I laboured
Under the misapprehension
As ripped as Marek.
So I was told
By the one who loved me,
Before restoration set in
And I returned to study.
I have often been
A study in tolerance
He worked until he finished.
A final flourish
Was to clean the window.
It sparkles, still,
I will let it shine
There is no telling what a little bit of sunlight
Will do for my soul
I may yet sing
There is still time.
