Splash it wide
Splash it wide
Let it fall across the wall
Flicker in the sunlight
Sway in the wind
Stretching as the sun sets
Fading into half light
As the Night Owl calls
How long until
It returns
To cast its shadow
On another day
Creeping slowly
Over the balcony
A fickle finger
A portentous digit
An anachronism
In a digital world
Pointing up
Perforating a bloated sky
Proclaiming itself
As conductor
With baton waving
To its own internal song
An electronic hum
A telegraph pole
Keeping a connecting
Ear unto the ground
Marching in equidistant
Lines
Shimmering
In a heat haze
Marking the passage of days
A row of ancient sundials
Higher than treetops
What good are they now
Other than as a rest stop
For the birds
And to make absurd
Shadows fall across
A bedroom wall
On a full moon
When the truth
Is humdrum
And shifting shapes
Make no sense
At all.
