There is never
lossmusicpoliticsmemorytimelove
There is never
Total silence
Even the deaf have tinnitus
However intermittent
The sound of one’s own
Heartbeat
Ringing in the ears
Never complete darkness
The flicker of a shadow
A random flow of vessels
Crisscrossing a closed eye
Arterial roads
At midnight
Is there ever
Completely dead
When we are so much a part
Of the real world
Carried in memory
Held close to the heart
Bound within
The pages of a journal
Even death
Brings little freedom
As bonds
Of love and trust
Continue to hold
Bold lovers together
Prisoners
Of conscience
Not without compassion
When in the act
Of recollection
There is rebellion
As the lost souls
Choking in hollows
Weeping in darkness
Find release
In the sweetness
Of a kiss
