What does the wind learn
What does the wind learn
In its blind rush
To blow
Wilder than before
Pausing only to
Change direction
On a restless whim.
A recalcitrant escapade
Barely contained
Never abashed by ingratitude
Never welcomed
Unless by windmills
Or at sea
When empty sails flap
Uselessly in the doldrums
Waiting for the breeze
To ease the right of passage
Sighing in repose
Twisting on its tail
Baring itself to the world
Tearing into a frenzy
Without regard
For etiquette or limitation
Easing its restriction
For a moment
Gathering itself for a final flurry
A thrash of power
As a swell of waves rise up
To greet it
The meeting of two great arbiters
Praying together
Offering mutual respect
A shadow dance
A relentless ballet
An arduous performance
Of Wagnerian proportions
A neverending cycle
Of audacious power
Is there ever a victor?
Ask the sea,
Perhaps
Only the wind would know.
