What unsettles me?
What unsettles me?
When all is said
The only thing of consequence
Is the passing of time
As insects go about their business
Easy pickings for the birds
Shrikes and Whistlers
Always on the lookout for
A Dragonfly
Such a tasty treat to take home
The woman next door
Plays peekaboo with a baby
There is such happiness
In its cry
Pigeons are always interested spectators
There is always music
From across the street
Where diners eat alfresco
The manager puts half his takings in an envelope
To pass on
To the grey man with a briefcase
And a bulge beneath his jacket
The Asian couple on the corner
Who are always up with the larks
To clean empty offices
Return to their home
Which has seen better days
Both always look so very tired
The days keep getting longer
The work a little harder
Their oldest daughter
Has made dinner
But not until she had finished her homework
A straight-A student
She plays violin but wants to be a doctor
The apple of her father’s eye
It is why
He works so hard
Private schools are barely
Within their reach
But they will continue to sacrifice
Themselves for their
Children’s future
As an old man shuffles along
Using a walking frame
Stopping every few yards
To catch his breath
Making his way to the Thai
Restaurant on the High Street
For the early evening special
He has never left the country
But knows a good Pad Thai
When he tastes one
Not even trees stand still
Everything evolves
Into something different
Given time and patience
So will I
What unsettles me
Is of little consequence
When all that is, as all that was
One day will surely die.
