You see me smile

lossmusicpoliticstimemortalitysolitude

You see me smile

I see you laugh

We go about our business

Living a life

Walking in daydreams

Shopping for candles

Browsing the wine selection

Taking used books

From the secondhand collection

Swapping old stories

For new ones

Eating brunch

With a bunch of old friends

Saying sorry

For any hurt feelings

Trying to make amends

Going home alone

After saying goodbye

Night after night

Waiting to die

But we smile

And laugh

At each other

Going about our business

It is so easy

To believe

What we see

Is the way

We want it to be

Anything else

Would have consequence

It would mean

We would have to care

About what might be lost

And that would be

So much harder

To bear.
