April 13, 2016Poem

Daily missive for Wednesday the 29th of July.

Inspired by the poems of Wilfred Owen... World War One poet...though not in his style.

There are spent shells

Lying on the beach

Everywhere.

Buried in sand,

Wedged between pebbles,

Worn smooth

By the passage of time,

Thrown up

By another explosion,

As wave after wave

Breaks over

Tired defences,

And pours scorn

Down onto this

Broken beach head,

Leaving salty dogs

In steady retreat,

Scarring the pitted shore

With the detritus

Of battle,

The flap and gasp

Of dying

Fish out of water,

Urchins lying

In shallow pools,

Empty vessels

Covered in crabs,

Seeking a new home

Before the next barrage.
