Is there a reason for

naturemusicmemoryloveidentitymortality

Is there a reason for

A flutter in the stomach

An expectancy

Even though nothing has happened

Why does the body

Act against its own interests

When the only thing to change

Is the intake of alcohol

The whole balance of biology

Is impacted

By the euphoria of stimulant

Clouding the judgement

Things are simultaneously

The same but different

Complicated and yet

So confoundedly simple

Nothing to write home about

You may say

Though how many emails

Are blasted off

After the third scotch

Novels written

With one hand on a bottle

As though every thought

Could change the world

It doesn’t of course

Not even Hemmingway

Got that right

The bell tolled for him

As well it might

If everyone could act

With the unselfishness

Of a flight attendant

The world might be a better place

A little more dependent on alcohol

But more chilled

A little less up for the fight

So to speak

And yet still

The stomach flutters

It might be turbulence

Or a little flatulence

As likely as it is a memory

Of a last dance

A failed romance

Never joining the mile high club

Who really cares

When the reality is

You’ve known love

Which is all that moves you now

Being in this place

On your own

What would you give

To see

The love of your life

By your side

Her head on your shoulder

It is that one thought

Going round and around

Turning you upside down

Keeping you sane

Glimpsing the moon

An eternal magic

Remembering what it means

To have been loved

Even when on a plane

Three miles high

Perversely, it still

Keeps you grounded

Leaving numbed thoughts

Clear enough to say

No thank you, really...

I’ll just have a juice

If you please.
