It is a good chair
It is a good chair
A little closer to Ikea
Than Chippendale
Who were an all male
Beefcake dance troupe
Did they do the full Monty?
Whatever that is
Apart from an out of work
Sheffield steel worker
Monty was a desert rat
Not a Meerkat
But a soldier in the war
Never got over losing
Out to Eisenhower
Who became a President
On the back of his service
He wouldn’t get there now
No charisma
No money
No chance
It is a solid chair
Pushed up to a writing table
Do people do that now
A laptop is open
It is the way of things
A coat hanging lazily
Over the back
Ready for a quick getaway
Everything is temporary
But the chair has stood
In the same place for some time
There are indents in the carpet
From heavy bodies
Taking the weight off
Browsing their history
With a fingertip
They will soon be gone
The chair will wait
For another recliner
Perhaps the next one
Will use a fountain pen
And a sheet of vellum
Neatly stacked
In the velvet lined box
A throwback
To a more genteel time
When chairs were more
Chippendale than Ikea
Hotel rooms
More romantic than functional.
