It’s Christmas time...

naturepoliticstimeidentitymortality

It’s Christmas time...

Trouble me to care

When the truth

Is so easily dismissed

The only reaction

Is to recoil from the smell

Of pity

I can see you there

Standing in shadow

Surrounded by

A pall of hunger

In bas-relief

A fetid halo

Where will this end

With you swapping

Your space for mine

As we collide

Going in opposite directions

This is no easy skin

To be in

Even with expensive

Moisturiser

The doors can still

Slide shut

Leaving me

Cheeks pink

On the outside

Take my coat

Try it for size

Stay warm and beautiful

The wind will chill

The bones of you.

Before this night is out

There will be tragedy

It is commonplace

But the compliments

Of the season

Lend a poignancy

To an everyday crisis
