It was a wet night
It was a wet night
After a warm day
But autumn could be like that
I gave you my overcoat
Draping it over your shoulders
To take the edge off the cold
I remember we talked about
Some really silly things.
We were in no hurry
To get home,
If the world was flat
We would sail to the edge
And fall off
But what would we find below
Without street lights,
The moon would be chasing
The stars
On the top side,
Always one step ahead
Of the sun god.
Keeping the world warm
Until winter,
When Jack Frost came out to play
With the river trolls
Who never get a good press
But were loved by their parents
Who wanted them home
Before the first rays of the sun
Could turn them into stone.
We saw the evidence
In the shadows
Stone circles
Madcaps, dancing madrigals,
Wearing facemasks
To hide their identities
From the river police
Counting crows
Hurrying us homeward
Before the weather
Took a turn for the worse
And all the while
The overcoat
Kept you warm
Whilst I was a valiant
Galahad.
