Confused is the rabbit

naturememorytimemortality

Confused is the rabbit

Caught in headlights

Too startled to run

In sensory overload

A brain ill-equipped to understand

What to do

A rat in a trap

Stuck up a drainpipe

Still climbing

A Shark keeps swimming

For want of an option

A bear falls into a pit

With nothing to do but sit

And wait

He will never learn not

To take the bait

A male Mantis

Will always lose his head

What could he do instead

It is in his make-up

To take the risk

Russian roulette

Without a gun

But the bullet will bite

Just the same

By any other name

It is an age old story

There is no glory

In survival

It is a primal directive

Written into the genes

More than memory

It is primary

More than a rabbit

A mantis or a bear

In evolutionary terms

Though we may be

Eaten by a shark

It is unlikely,

We conform to a biological

Imperative

To survive

It may not be glorious

Often it is tedious

But what we tell each other

Every day

Is still the greatest

Story of our lives.
