An etched pen-and-ink illustration with a red accent, evoking "What of the gentle simmer?".

What of the gentle simmer?

naturecitymusictimemortality

What of the gentle simmer?

The hot flush

As temperatures rise.

Held in check

By fear of consequence

The uncontained burst

Into the world

The seethe of uncontrolled

Passion

A volatility of rationale

Inflamed by disregard

For purpose

Slow release of pressure

Softening of position

Cooling of disposition

By degrees,

Held in check

By the bind

Of disconnection.

There is a deepening

Of resolve

The tightening of belts

The restraint

Of a sharp release

Holding the tide

Keeping it at bay

Behind a screed

Of reinforced concrete,

Shoring up defences

To keep your powder dry

Until at first but slowly

Spider cracks appear,

Fragmenting

An elaborate construction

No longer fit

Or purposeful,

Dispersing surface tension

In a gout of violence

A spume and spray

That lays your world

To waste,

Destroys all you would protect

In its blind distribution

Leaving nothing

In its wake

But the dissipation

Of your pain,

Cooling in its reformation

An embittered crisp

With a brittle crust

Of senseless rage

And anger

No longer

Held in check.
