Who are you now?
Who are you now?
I thought to understand
What lay behind your eyes
In the swirl of the iris
As it dilates
The way it changes
In different light
From blue to brown
Then green
As well as I understood
My own silent
Meditations,
Narcissistic ruminations.
Who are we
If not what we see,
Looks can change
In the passing of a day.
Is it in the voice
Or smile,
The familiar touch,
The smell
At the nape of the neck
We come to know
Each other
And in this recognition
Find ourselves.
Are we intention
Meeting interaction
And in this intervention
Is manufactured
A unique reaction
To the process
Of the world,
Which by and by
Brings us to this
Multiple representation
Of what we choose to call
Ourselves.
Then what of
Thoughts
And hard fought victories
As simply slip away,
Escape into the widening
Singularity
The space between
What was known
Of all we were
And what we might have been,
A distance too great
A negotiation.
When every proposition,
Old or new,
Lies just beyond our grasp
Who are we then
When what was won is lost
With little consolation
In the losing,
If what has been
Is gone,
Holding on to
Who we are
And what is done
Is surely
Worthy of its cost.
