With a nod to Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse

Who do we turn to

When no one is looking

Who do we ask

When no one seems to care

It is easier to believe

Omnipresence

Is something other than

The internet

Than to believe

We stand alone

The power of belief

Is in the message

The faith we place

In the honesty of its delivery

The integrity of a postal service

Royal or otherwise

When it has passed through

So many hands,

Its content re-packaged

The fragility of its design

Bulked out

With an extra layer

Of impenetrable bubble-wrap

To cover the weakness

In its argument,

Before it ever reached our door

Who do we turn to

In search of an answer

When the people we care for

Are no longer there

It is easy to say

They never leave

But stand by our side

To give strength and to guide us

As a sweetener

A jump-start, a sugar rush

An adrenaline boost

To help us move on

Humans are designers

Producers, fixers, builders, do-ers

Some clever souls master

The art of nurturing

It is the reason we struggle

To identify with the broken

And the old

Even the young

Can be a blind spot

We are told

It is wrong to be a burden

But if anything is certain

It is true

We all need someone

To bear witness to our lives

As without an observer

There is no proof

We godless individuals

Were ever here at all.
